LONG TIME CRAFTER, FIRST TIME QUILTER

This one’s a future project: I want to make a quilt. I have a great sewing machine that I would love to use more, and I have always wanted to make myself a quilt. The opportunity couldn’t be much better – soon I’ll be going through a large life transition (or a few), and it would be nice to commemorate that.

Fellow blogger, Snedapants just recently adventured into the world of quilts and did a really fantastic job that has only fed my desires for quilt-construction. I won’t have quite the same deadline looming as Snedapants did, so I might create my own pattern. I know this will be a much more difficult task in practice than in planning, as I have no experience with this kind of thing.

At the end of April, once I’ve finished the bulk of my schoolwork, I plan to head to Joann Fabrics and dig through their ‘remnants’ bin. I suppose I have a few color concepts rolling around: I’ve been very into earth-tones lately, so maybe a mixture of browns and muddy reds. I suppose I’ll have to wait and see what I dig up. Inspirational pictures:

I really like these two from Hip to Piece Squares (the cleverness of some blog names makes me feel like a slouch). And this one from Hip Mama Crafts:

Here are a few others from Pine Needle Quilt Shop, Lemon Tree Tales, and Buzzville, respectively:

You can see I haven’t really made up my mind about the style. I am quite certain that I am far less talented than the above quilters. I will merely have to do my best, and make it up as I go (not unusual for me!).

Any quilt-spertise to offer? Things I might not think of as a non-quilter? Do you like any one of these in particular? Help! Advise! Suggest!

I like the 2nd, 4th and 6th one the best. I just ventured into the world of quilting so I don’t have much advice accept to buy a rotary cutter and a self-healing cutting mat. It’ll make your life so much easier.
