Good morning! It’s 8:19am at the start of this post. I’ve actually been on the computer for close to an hour already, and most people aren’t even at work. Damn. When did this habit start? Probably when I was mid-thesis and all I did was spend time on my computer, all day long. Though I broke the habit earlier this summer, when I started eating breakfast on the porch every day (though I still checked my email every morning before work), I’m back to it. It makes me want to hurl. Granted, it’s a temporary phase until I start working my grown-up job, but what ties me so to my computer? And what if it becomes less temporary?
It’s time to slow things down. Drawing inspiration from the Slow Bicycle, Slow Travel, and Slow Food (and other Slow) Movements, I’m going to have a personal Slow Computer Movement. That doesn’t mean I’m going to sell my Macbook and buy a 5 year old Dell, but I’m going to try and separate myself– especially now when I’m supposed to be on a personal mini-vacation before I become one of those in the workforce. I’m not going to set parameters for this, but I am going to spend some time outside on this beautiful day in Boston. I’ll spend some time walking around and enjoying my surroundings. Maybe I’ll take the occasional photograph to share with you.
Where can you slow things down in your own life?
