FELT COASTERS, HOMEMADE MAGNETS, AND NEW STUFF

Now that you’ve gotten a peek at the new apartment, I wanted to show you some of the little things I’ve been working on. The bigger things are slowly but surely rolling along, and you will see them sooner or later!

Inspired by this Design Sponge post, I made some felt coasters.

My color palette for the apartment is of primary colors and earth tones. These felts go right along with that. I used old paperboard bar coasters, many of which have been saved from places my boyfriend or I like or because they marked special occasions… and some are just cool.

We’ve both been short on magnets for awhile, but have a bunch of semi-useless matchbooks, knick-knacks, and business cards lying around… SO I made them into magnets.

Most of these are linked… Rachel’s Kitchen (RIP) handed out the “get your name on the wall” cards when they were trying to open up a new restaurant that ended up being the Hungry Mother (the little button). The fancy looking Ms are the card and matchbook from Marco Cucina Romana in the North End where I ate one of my most memorable Boston meals–even down to well-designed free stuff. The Hand matchbook is Alex’s from New Mexico and the little monster guy just looked like it should be a magnet.

Last but not least, we got some new stuff in the kitchen. We didn’t have a full set of dishes, and the ones we had are the inexpensive, useful, but not very attractive College-Student kind. I picked these plain glass plates and bowls up at Bed Bath and Beyond:

Not only are they a simple and classic design, but I love the way that they take on whatever other decorative  elements might be on/under/around them. They also make the food on/in them the focus (as it should be!), not the plate or bowl itself:

And, last but not least, I picked up these containers for bulk stuff at Target:

They contain flour, brown rice, sugar, and coffee beans. I love the simple and classic design of these, pretty similarly to the dinnerware. They aren’t trying to upstage their contents.

So that’s a glimpse at the latest smaller additions to the apartment! More to come soon!
