Beauty Regimen

Last week Kayla posted about her beauty regimen, including her most trusted products and routines. I was all ready to respond with mine in her comments, but figured I would draw the conversational thread through to Reasonably So.

Body:

Gillette Classic Shave Foam for Sensitive Skin – This “men’s” product is my go-to. It’s gentle, useful, and CHEAP. There is no reason why anyone should pay so much extra for the fancy gel or WHATEVER. This stuff works perfectly and costs so much less. Barbasol and Target make similar and comparably cheap products as well.

Curel Ultra Healing Lotion – The bottle will even tell you it is “intensive” but honestly, this is the best lotion for me. It is not at all greasy and actually leaves my skin softer. Do you ever feel like some moisturizers just “sink in” and disappear? Not this one.

Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar – My skin is quite dry. This keeps it clean and doesn’t dry it further. Something you might never have known about me otherwise: To keep ultra-dryness at bay, I shower only every other day. Call it gross if you want, but honestly it keeps my skin easy to live in.

Hair:

Aveeno Nourish + Mositure Shampoo & Conditioner – I love this stuff, though with Kayla’s hearty endorsement of Dove’s Daily Moisture, I might try something new next time.

Arrojo Shine Spray – My stylist used to work at the Arrojo Studio and suggested this as a shine product on straight styles. It smooths, shines, and keeps frizz down on humid days.

Aveda Be Curly Curl Enhancer - On a day that I’m embracing my natural curl (read: overslept), I scrunch a dollop of this into my curls and go. Not only does it beautify them plenty, but it smells amaaaaaazing. I’ve been using Be Curly for eight years!

Face:

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser – Alex and I both use this every day. Again… gets the job done without drying my skin out!

St. Ives Invigorating Apricot Scrub – I never really got exfoliating before, but started to do it not long before our wedding last year. HELLO. I scrub with St. Ives about 3 or 4 times a week now and it keeps my skin quite clear.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion – I used a sample of this for awhile and haven’t gone back. After more than a year of use, I can assure you, this stuff is amazing for those of us with dry skin. One of the smaller pump bottles lasts me about six months.

Makeup:

Benefit You Rebel Lite SPF 15 Tinted Moisturizer or Bare Minerals SPF 15 Matte Foundation – I am PALE so I always need some SPF in my day-to-day makeup. On a dry-skin day I use the Benefit You Rebel and love the slight glow it lends to my skin. On a shinier day, I’ll buff on the Bare Minerals Matte. And if you don’t already know, get a concealer brush for your Bare Minerals – works better to disguise blemishes than any other product I’ve tried (my sister taught me that!).

Stila Convertible Color in Lilium or Benefit Dandelion Highlighting Powder – I don’t always wear blush, but when I do I pair the type to the foundation – cream with moisturizer and powder with powder. Stila’s Convertible Color lends a natural flushed look while Benefit’s Dandelion adds an irresistible brightness to my cheeks!

Benefit They’re Real Mascara or MAC Plush Lash Mascara – For real drama, They’re Real takes the cake. For plenty of definition, Plush Lash does the trick. I choose based on the occasion!

EO Lavender Aloe Lip Balm – I am incredibly picky about my lip balm because I have full lips and dry skin… this is hands-down the best lip balm I have ever used. As luck would have it, of course, they discontinued it. When I stopped being able to buy it anywhere I called the company and they shared the sad news (this was about two years ago). I asked if they had any backstock and they had nine tubes of this stuff left. I bought every one. I still have a few left and honestly, I don’t really know what I’ll do when I run out. Suggestions???

What products do you use? Is there a part of your beauty regimen that you just can’t live without? I would love to hear from you.

Thanks for the inspiration, Kayla!! See her adorable city elopement here!

Self Photo Challenge

I’ve tried to move this blog away from super personal posts – I’m not sure why, but I’ll probably think about it for a week now- but this is quite a personal post for a good reason. The Paper Mama recently posed a challenge for the general internet community (which I discovered via Brenda) to take pictures of ourselves – and be proud of them. SO HERE I AM!  Not a perfect hair or skin day. Just me. Unedited. The only makeup I’m wearing is mascara (because I have a complex about my pale eyelashes). Straight face (which some people have told me looks angry or sad).

The challenge also includes the following written prompts to give you an idea of what I’m up to currently:

Obsessing over my new camera and lens. A Canon 60D with a 50mm 1.4 lens (used it to take the above picture with the wireless remote shutter). Having a fully functioning DSLR is bringing me back to my great love of photography. I take it to the classroom with me every day (I so wish I could share the images of the kids with you… it’s just not really legal!) and have a stylish and functional camera bag coming soon to make it possible for me to carry it all the time. It’s good to be back.

Working on conscientious eating. In an effort to be healthier and happier with my body, I’m cutting back on most starchy foods and meat during the week while doubling my consumption of vegetables and fruit to make up the difference. If I feel like I need to add some bulk to my salads, I spoon in a 1/2 cup of quinoa. I’m also trying to avoid refined sugar. Though, I do allow myself to “cheat” on the weekends because I LOVE food and I’d miss pizza and pasta too much otherwise. I’m also working on my fitness because I don’t want to be upset by my flappy upper arms in all of the wedding photos.

Thinking about Early Childhood Education. Graduate school is quite something, really. It is all-consuming and exhausting and frustrating, but it is also enlightening. I really am learning. I’m thinking more deeply about my profession and what it means to the world, about how to excel in it, and about where it might take me. I’m thinking about how Early Childhood Education came to be so important to me. I’m thinking about how I can make it more accessible. I’m thinking a lot, often, about the cultural nature of human development.

Anticipating THE WEDDING!!!! I’m getting so excited for our party. I’ve had a vision of this day for so long (since the summer of 2010, so, really not that long compared to those who have lifelong wedding scrapbooks), and I am eager to see it fulfilled. It means I’ll get to see so many people I love from so many distant places, which is really the best. It means I get to share vows with Alex (which we have not yet done- the civil ceremony was quite simple) and that’s incredibly exhilarating.

Listening to Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye featuring Kimbra. I am so into this song right now and the video is also exceptional. Also on heavy rotation: Love on Top by Beyonce. Alex is a little bit (a lot) obsessed with Bey and her key changes and her sultry voice, but I’ll admit it… I love this song, too.

Eating Trader Joe’s Unsulfered, Sweetened & Dried Mango. I know, I know they’re super high in sugar, but I feel better about eating these as a sweet snack than, say, a Snickers. If I’m craving something sweet, I have three pieces and that’s it! I want to try the freeze dried mango bits next time.

Wishing Our move back to the East Coast could happen sooner. We’ve talked a lot about the future and what’s next and a whole lot about where‘s next. The Bay Area offers so much excitement and great energy but it’s not home. It feels incredibly far away from home. It’s not exactly practical to pick up in the middle of a master’s program (in which I’m doing really well) just because I’m homesick. I wish it were now, but hopefully between now and then the days pass quickly and are good to us.

YIKES STRIPES!!!

I was just checking out J.Crew Factory‘s newest arrivals and couldn’t help but laugh as I switched from window to window. I took a screencap so you could see the slightly insane collection of shirts for which I was window shopping (don’t worry, Alex, I didn’t buy anything!!!)

Obviously I’ve got stripes on the brain. It wasn’t til after I took the screencap that I looked down at my sleevies and realized what I was wearing today…

OOOOOH boy.

Happy weekend, everyone!

Cooked Playdough

Have you ever made playdough? As a preschool teacher, I sometimes take for granted how simple it is. The name-brand stuff doesn’t seem pricey compared to so many toys out there, but it can be even more affordable if you make it yourself! It’s amazing how much kids love this stuff (especially when it’s fresh), and it really helps develop their fine motor skills.

The thing about playdough is that it will ALWAYS dry out. Guaranteed. It’s nice to be able to make your own to refill those charming little yellow containers if need be. Recently we made some new yellow playdough in the classroom to replace the crusty old pink stuff. There are slight variations to the recipe, but you’ll pretty much find the same thing everywhere.

Cooked Playdough Recipe

1 c. flour
1/2 c. salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. water
2 tbsp. oil
1 tsp. food coloring
Combine 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt and 2 teaspoons cream of tartar in a large saucepan. Gradually stir in 1 cup water mixed with 2 tablespoons oil and 1 teaspoon food coloring. Cook over medium  heat, stirring constantly until a ball forms. Remove from heat, cool and knead until smooth. Store in an airtight container.

I have some tips for you, based on my own experience:

1) If you make it once and think it’s too dry (this may have to do with your climate or how long you cook it), add an extra tablespoon of vegetable oil.

2) It’s best to knead for 10 minutes straight as soon as the dough is cool enough to touch. This will make it much smoother. I love the sensory experience of kneading warm play dough. If you have little helpers around, they love to help with this part.

3) You can also personalize by adding glitter! If you choose to add the food coloring once the dough is made, you can create a crazy tie-dye effect while kneading.

4) Adults can enjoy playdough, too. I have a friend who taught one of a famous chef’s children in preschool and she said he used to come in and make tiny playdough pizza and ravioli all the time.

5) For additional fun, just add dinosaurs.

50mm Portraits

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I am loving my new 50mm f/1.4 lens. It makes everyone look good. Having it, though, makes me miss film cameras. I wish I had the time and money to make film photographs again.

I’ve been thinking an awful lot about my photo habits. Am I an amateur photographer? I always feel silly when I say that. Plus it implies that I haven’t been trained, though in reality I have several years of classes under my belt. Have I ever sold a photograph? No. Have I had some published? Yes. Hobbyist? Is that the word? Also feels cheesy to me.

Does anyone have any better ideas?
